DAY 2 - GUIDED TOUR OF ASSISI - FREE LUNCH - GUIDED TOUR OF GUBBIO

Breakfast at the hotel and meeting with the driver. Transfer by bus to Assisi, meeting with the guide and guided tour. Pax et Bonum! This is the greeting with which Assisi welcomes you, a Franciscan place par excellence, not only in Umbria and Italy, but throughout the world. St Francis was in fact born in Assisi in 1182; in the place where it is believed his birthplace was located, today stands the Chiesa Nuova. It is in Assisi that he was baptised, in the Cathedral of San Rufino, it is among its alleys that he spent his youth dreaming of a future as a valiant knight, it is here, where the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore stands today, in the Piazza del Vescovado, that he stripped himself, repudiating earthly goods for love of God and his brothers and sisters. It is still in Assisi, in the Church of San Damiano, that praying before the crucifix, he receives the task of renewing the Church of Christ, it is in the town square that he begins his preaching and his work of charity and peace, and it is finally here that he dies in 1226. His remains are preserved in the Basilica of St Francis, but the saint still lives on in every stone of Assisi. Walk through its enchanting alleys and guided tour of the Franciscan places. Radio guide to visit the Basilica of St. Francis included. Free lunch. Afterwards, meeting with the driver and departure for Gubbio, arrival and guided tour. Gubbio is one of the oldest towns in Umbria. Here you can breathe history from every stone and there are many traces of its glorious past: the Roman Theatre dating back to the 1st century AD, the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo which dominates the city and houses the remains of the saint, the patron saint of Gubbio, the Gothic Cathedral, the Church of Santa Maria Nuova which houses the fresco "La Madonna del Belvedere" by Ottaviano Nelli, a master painter and miniaturist who was born in Gubbio. In the Palazzo dei Consoli, seat of the Pinacoteca Civica, we find the "Tavole Eugubine", seven bronze tablets bearing inscriptions in Umbrian characters from the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C. and Latin characters from the 2nd and 1st centuries B.C., very important documents for the history of the Italic peoples. Return to the hotel, dinner in a restaurant and overnight stay.

DAY 3 - GUIDED TOUR OF PERUGIA - TOUR OF SPELLO - SPOLETO

Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. Meeting with the guide and guided tour of Perugia in the morning. Perugia, the capital of the Umbria region, is worth a visit not only for the beauty of its hilltop location, but also for its beautiful ancient buildings. Before coming under Roman rule, ancient Perusia was one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan federation and considerable sections of the Etruscan walls, which stretched 2,800 metres around the town, have been preserved. Perugia is known to the art world as the centre of the Umbrian School of Painting in the 15th and 16th centuries and its greatest exponents, Pietro Vannucci (known as Perugino) and Bernardino Betti (known as Pinturicchio), worked here. The young Raphael worked in Perugino's studio until 1504. You will find works by all three in churches and public buildings in Perugia. Guided tour of Perugia with a private tour guide. Free lunch. The Consular Gate marks the entrance to the city of Spello or, as Julius Caesar called it, the 'Splendidissima Colonia Julia', an enchanting village of Roman origin, counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy, thanks to its rich environmental, cultural and artistic heritage. Spello still preserves traces of its historical past with its ancient walls and Properzio Towers protecting Porta Venere, another access point to the town. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore can be reached by strolling through charming alleys and ancient streets, along which flowered balconies overlook the town and which, with the passage of time, have become true symbols of the town, and still remain one of its most sought-after attractions. The church houses an artistic treasure inside: the Baglioni Chapel, with Deruta majolica floor tiles and frescoes by Pinturicchio. Spello also boasts a rich picture gallery and, just outside the walls, a marvellous museum complex known as the "Villa Dei Mosaici", which has brought to light 500 square metres of precious mosaics whose central theme is the grape harvest and wine. After visiting Spello, departure by bus for Spoleto, accommodation in a 4* hotel, dinner in a restaurant and overnight stay.

DAY 4 - GUIDED TOUR OF SPOLETO - FREE LUNCH - VISIT TO TODI

Ritorno in hotel a Spoleto, cena in ristorante e pernottamento.

DAY 5 - VISIT TO ORVIETO & GUIDED TOUR OF ORVIETO UNDERGROUND

Breakfast at the hotel, check out and departure by bus to Orvieto and visit. Orvieto, an ancient city of Etruscan origin that dominates the valley of the Paglia river from the top of the tuff cliff on which it stands. A beautiful place to visit with a unique history dating back millions of years. We take a walk through the historical centre of Orvieto and visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, better known as the Duomo, a magnificent masterpiece of Gothic and Romanesque architecture, one of the most important in Europe. Another symbol of the city, a few steps away from a breathtaking viewpoint, is St Patrick's Well, a spectacular work of 16th-century engineering. Free lunch. Once upon a time... a city. It sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale, instead it is the beginning of a story that, like an old fairy tale, tells of an almost unbelievable adventure: the discovery of a city beneath another city. The city is Orvieto, which already seems to have stepped out of the pages of a storybook, perched on a high cliff, its peripheral verticality isolating it from the rest of the world. A cliff that, even though it has supported the city for three thousand years, still proves to be inexperienced in performing such a familiar task. Collapses, landslides and tremors have always made its inhabitants wary, due to the fragility of the rocks that make it up: tuffs and pozzolanas, extremely friable materials that can almost be scratched away with nails. But it is for this same reason that these materials can easily be excavated, drilled, to open a cave.... two... a hundred... a thousand. A guided tour of the Orvieto Sotterranea is the most appropriate way to get in touch with this particular cultural aspect of a city very rich in history and artistic gems. Step by step mysterious and fascinating echoes speak of Etruscan Velzna, while ghosts of the mediaeval and Renaissance city emerge from the damp shadows. Where the winding underground route runs parallel to the cliff, from panoramic openings day contends with darkness in a succession of tunnels, staircases, unexpected passages and overlapping rooms. Transfer by bus to Orvieto station. END OF BUS SERVICES. Pick-up of the group for transfer back home. GOODBYE! We bid farewell to Umbria, taking it into our hearts!
